Saul is a Nobel Laureate (Physics, 2011), Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, with expertise in astrophysics, instrumentation, data analysis, and image processing. He was awarded the E. O. Lawrence Award "for his leading contributions to an unexpected discovery of extraordinary importance: the determination, through the careful study of distant supernovae, that the expansion of the universe is speeding up rather than slowing down." This was named the "scientific breakthrough of the year" by Science magazine. Saul is presently leader of a project to launch an advanced telescope into orbit.
