Berkeley Earth Data Powers New Climate Station Game from Sony Interactive

Sony Interactive today launched Climate Station, a first-of-its-kind interactive experience that transforms over a century of climate data into an immersive, story-driven journey, now available for free on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2.

Developed as part of Sony’s commitment to the United Nations’ Playing for the Planet Alliance, Climate Station blends cutting-edge gaming technology with trusted scientific sources, including data from Berkeley Earth, to make open climate science engaging and accessible.

Explore Climate Change Through Four Dynamic Modes

Climate Station invites users into a globe-spanning story told through four immersive modes, each revealing a different lens on our planet’s climate:

  • In Weather Year, users are introduced to the complex interconnected weather systems of planet Earth through a visual exploration of the meteorological events of 2019.
  • Observations include 120 years’ worth of climate data, including detailed temperature records for thousands of locations – charting the gradual warming of our planet.
  • In Projections, data from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) approved climate models allow users to explore how various choices will affect our future climate up to the end of the century, and the impact it would have on the planet.
  • Climate Station also contains an Explainer Library, which features 90 minutes of engaging multimedia content explaining climate change.

High-Resolution Data for Over 8,000 Global Cities

Berkeley Earth’s high-resolution temperature dataset—used in Climate Station—was developed to make global warming trends visible and relevant at the local level, with data available for thousands of cities around the world. Built using advanced statistical techniques and drawing from over 50,000 weather stations, our dataset is built upon Berkeley Earth’s transparent methodology and available open access.

Berkeley Earth’s high-resolution dataset provides temperature information at 0.25° x 0.25° spatial resolution—roughly 25 km²—offering unparalleled geographic specificity. By incorporating advanced statistical interpolation, bias correction, and machine learning tools, the dataset enhances coverage across coastlines, mountain regions, and underserved parts of the Global South. It includes metrics like maximum and minimum daily temperatures, climate trends over time, and custom national or city-level subsets for more than 8,000 locations. Designed to support adaptation, infrastructure planning, and energy modeling, this dataset gives developers, decision-makers, and the public access to local climate information that is often missing from global models.

The Climate Station game is available for free download from the Sony Playstation store. More information on the Climate Station intiative can be accessed here.
