Berkeley Earth Welcomes New Board Members

Berkeley Earth welcomes Angel Lance and Dr. Christa Hasenkopf as Board Directors.

Berkeley, Ca.— Berkeley Earth is pleased to announce the addition of two members to its Board of Directors: Angel Lance, founder and CEO of Motive Power, and Dr. Christa Hasenkopf, Director, Air Quality Programs and the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) at the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago.

Motive Power is a Northern California-based consulting firm that champions sustainable business practices to protect the planet. Additionally, Lance founded the National Public Utilities Council (NPUC) which collaborates with utilities to expedite a carbon neutral energy future, and the Gulch Environmental Foundation, a nonprofit that explores carbon sequestration in farming and other conservation practices that help address climate change.

“True progress begins at the intersection of critical thinking and genuine collaboration. I’m thrilled to join an organization that truly embodies these values. Slowing and ultimately reversing global warming can only be built on understanding and collaborating around a common set of facts. Berkeley Earth’s amazing work making unimpugnable, scientifically verified climate science data accessible to a larger audience, will help lay the groundwork for meaningful change,” said Lance.

Dr. Hasenkopf, who also co-founded OpenAQ, has been a leader in the movement to expand open access to air quality and environmental data. She was featured in two episodes of Berkeley Earth’s Data Points podcast (Ep. 2 and Ep. 9) where she discussed issues such as the link between air pollution and shorter life expectancies and how better funding could have a significant impact on addressing air quality inequities and improving health outcomes.

“Berkeley Earth has had an outsized impact in providing the world with useful climate data and insights for over a decade,” Dr. Hasenkopf said. “Its independence, scientific excellence, and openness align perfectly with my own sense of mission, and I am honored and excited for the opportunity to contribute to its future trajectory.”

Lance and Dr. Hasenkopf join a strong team of board directors representing leaders in energy, venture capital, AI, and technology. Berkeley Earth’s current board members are: Berkeley Earth Co-Founder and Board Chair Elizabeth Muller, who also serves as Director of Strategy; Will Glaser, Bill Shireman, Co-Founder Richard Muller, Jim Boettcher, Robert Budnitz and Robert Murphy.
